History

What began in 1954 as a safe-haven for 3 chimpanzees that had retired from show business, Suncoast Primate Sanctuary is now home to over 120 formerly abused, forfeited or abandoned exotic animals. Whether arriving as unwanted pets, or from exotic animal trade, medical research facilities, or the entertainment industry, SPS provides these animals with lifelong comfort and a forever home. The Sanctuary is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, run almost entirely by volunteers (including medical doctors and veterinarians) and relies on the generosity of the community and local businesses to survive. The animals that arrive here have no other place to live. We are their last chance at survival, and to date, no animal has ever been turned away from our door.
